Environmental Management

IGO’s operations are spread out across the Goldfields- Esperance region, occupying land of varying biological significance. Our Nova Operation and exploration activities are situated in particularly rich and diverse habitats. Equally our exploration activities in Western Australia and Northern Territory occur in diverse habitats. In accordance with its Environmental Policy, IGO is committed to understanding and protecting the flora and fauna communities at each of its operations and across all our exploration activities.

We are also committed to contributing to the conservation of biodiversity within all its operating areas. In 2019, IGO began a program of field surveys to understand the potential impacts of our exploration activities across the Albany and Fraser Ranges, with a commitment to improving the scientific understanding of plants and animals in this sparsely explored region.

IGO seeks to implement effective and transparent engagement and communication with our stakeholders about our actual and potential environmental impacts.  We communicate with our stakeholders both directly and indirectly by providing summary information in our annual Sustainability Report.

Historically, environmental management in the mining industry has been focused on compliance management. At IGO, we diligently seek to operate in accord with the statutory environmental conditions placed on our Operations, and report non-compliance. However, at IGO, we look to go the extra critical step; to proactively monitor and measure our impacts thus enabling us to better manage the land over which we are temporary custodians and to ensure that we remain transparent in our actions and impacts.

We believe that effective environmental management arises from effective risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. We continue work to improve the integrity of our data and to better understand our impacts. As is relevant to the locations of our mining and exploration activities, we seek to contribute to the local-scale conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning.

IGO seeks to implement effective and transparent engagement and communication with our stakeholders about our actual and potential environmental impacts.  We communicate with our stakeholders both directly and indirectly by providing summary information in our annual Sustainability Report.

To guide responsible environmental management across our business, IGO introduced a set of Group Environmental Standards. These standards define a performance expectation that exceeds simple compliance with our statutory obligations.

Tailings Dam Disclosure

Tailing storage facilities (TSFs) are reservoirs or dams that store mine tailings. Mine tailings are the fine- grained waste rock material, suspended in a water slurry, that are discharged from an ore processing plant following the extraction of the desired metal or mineral. Inappropriate storage of tailings can lead to safety, health and or environmental hazards. Given this, IGO supports the need for the public disclosure of TSF management practices. IGO would like to acknowledge and pay respects to Traditional Owner groups whose land we are privileged to work on, and whose input and guidance we seek and value within the operation of our business. We acknowledge the strong, special physical and cultural connections to their ancestral lands.
